Why Enter Writing Contests?

Morning everyone, I guess the better question would be, why not?

I enter writing contests from time to time for the chance to win prizes like cash, fellowships, and of course notoriety in the way of published works. Not to mention, jump-starting your career!

There are many places to submit work for contests:

Winning Writers-I just entered a poem in the Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest and there was no fee! Plus, the possible prize is $1,000! Submit now through April 1, 2018

If one looked at Writing Career, one might find a plethora of interesting writing contests with prizes in the $10,000 range without fees!

We all want to make money for our writing, yet sometimes the creative bug hits, and we can’t help wondering if we have the right stuff to impress the judges and take a shot at winning some impressive money.

There are contests for poetry, fiction, non-fiction, feminists, and freelancers unable to work. If you are a writer, there is something for you, just browse their list that is put together by Brian Scott, editor-in-chief.

Another website for writers,  AWAI,  does a copywriting challenge and the top prize is $10,000! AWAI stands for American Writers & Artists Inc. and they have training programs on teaching the art of copywriting. They are the ones that inspired me to start writing from the beginning. This isn’t so much a contest as a challenge to write the best sales copy.

Another place I found challenges/contests for money with is Prose. Once you sign up, search for contests with monetary prizes and join the challenge. Many genres to choose from.

The downside to all of these contests is waiting for months to find out if you’re a winner. In addition, you need some kind of tracking system so you know what contest you entered and when. For me, it’s my trusty calendar, but for you, it might be a handy writing tool like Google Calendar, an app for iPhone or Android users.

The bottom line for us writers is, you’ll never know if you don’t try so, go on…what have you get to lose? More fitting, what have you got to gain?

Where Do You Write Best?

Hey folks,

I was going to share my new site on my social media pages and I realized: I haven’t written anything since revising it, so since the title of my website is Write Where You Are, I thought I’d ask the question of all you writers out there; Where do you write best?

  1. A poolside cabana
  2. A comfy chair in your office/study/living room
  3. Your patio
  4. A coffee shop
  5. On a beach
  6. In your bed
  7. A cabin in the woods
  8. On your front porch

I’m sure your answers will be some variation of whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. I bet you all have heard the term barefoot writer? It just means that as writers working from home, we could literally do our work in our pajamas if we wanted. However, in my experience, I have to treat writing like it is a nine to five job, so getting dressed and set up at my desk, coffee by my side and a pen and paper handy, is the where I write my best.

I have tried several of the options listed above and, although I’m the author of the blog Kimmy’s Patio, I don’t really write there, it’s more a state of mind I get into. Also, I get up early. In my experience, lollygagging around and putting other tasks before writing means writing does not get done. Or very little does. Maybe a blog post and answering my blogging buddies on social media or their own blogs. Not that that isn’t also important, it just isn’t enough. I don’t feel like I’ve  done my due diligence if I don’t spend 5-8 hours either writing or looking for writing jobs.

My “desk” needs work, I find chairs end up hurting my neck, so I have been sitting on an exercise ball with my laptop on some padding on a tv tray! How’s that for innovation! It is what works for me though, and it helps with my balance and core strength at the same time!

I have had to find a balance between writing and caring for the house, running errands, being there for my folks when they need me, etc. It can be done, it just takes discipline. Can you do all that and still write well you might ask? Yes! You simply have to manage your time wisely, try not to get distracted, make a schedule and stick to it. All easier said than done but it can be done.

Try changing up your routine or place you write and see if it doesn’t help. The two major changes I made when I decided to get serious about “this writing thing” was to (1) start early and (2) write every day. I write on my own blog, different platforms like Medium and Prose, and I do a bit of creative writing as well. I do it all in the same place. On my ball, at my “desk”, in my office.

That’s what works best for me for the time being. I’m hoping to someday get a real desk or maybe even a stand-up desk ( like this one from Varidesk) I would love to hear what works for you and where you do your best writing.

Leave me a comment and let me know if I can help you in any way.

Which Car Is Best? Civic, Cruze, or Fusion?

“I Want the Civic Dear”

Specifically the Honda Civic EX-L w/Navigation

(that’s what I would tell my husband anyway)

If you are searching for a new car soon, which car is the best value, has the best safety rating and gets the best gas mileage?

IMG_1043

That’s my choice among the three, I did a basic comparison, even throwing in a couple of other models, like the Hyundai and the Corolla.

In terms of price, they are very close across the board.

In terms of room, The Civic wins for front driver and passenger leg room.

In terms of safety, the Civic wins again with a perfect 5-star rating in Crash Test Results.

IMG_1045.PNG

The Civic gets better gas mileage as well, 32MPG city/42MPG hwy compared to the Elantra which gets 29/38 or the Corolla, which gets 28/36 respectively. The Cruze gets 29/39 and the Fusion gets 21/32.

I do like the styling of the Cruze compared to the Civic or the Fusion, however, the model EX-L is $23,300 compared to $23,475 (Cruze) and $23,740 (Fusion).

As far as torque and horsepower, the Cruze wins over the Fusion and the Civic, so if that is important to you, take it into consideration.

For my money, the Civic is the way to go, however I could be biased in my opinion. 😉

Three Benefits of Blue Moon Hemp CBD Vape Oil

Ever heard of CBD Oil or what it can do for you?

CBD Oil is an oil that is extracted from the stalks and seeds of industrial hemp plants. It is NOT psychoactive, it contains no THC but the plants are bred to have high concentrations of the naturally occurring Cannabinoid-Cannabidiol (CBDa).

It is considered a whole food with exceptional nutritional qualities in an easy to use form. It comes in vape oil for those who want to vape it, a tincture that can be added to food or beverages or used straight by dropping a few drops under the tongue, chewed in a CBD gum and even rubbed on the body as a salve.

From their website

I have been using it for about three months and I use Blue Moon Hemp company because they sell their product in a vapor shop right close to my neighborhood.

What it does for me:

  1. Helps me sleep
  2. Reduces my level of anxiety
  3. Stops pain

It can be ordered straight from the company by going to this link: Blue Moon Hemp and questions about the product can be found there or at this number- 844-425-8666

The vape oil comes in 4 strengths and several different flavors-I have only tried the Flan flavor and it is delicious.

Blue Moon Hemp has created a product that is affordable, quality, organic, non-GMO, and safe for everyone.  CBD Oil is just being discovered as a “wellness” supplement, helping people combat everything from depression to seizures. It will not make you “high”, you will not fail a drug test. You do not need a permit or a prescription to purchase it. Unlike medicinal marijuana, it is safe enough for anyone to use and perfectly legal in all 50 states.

I am lucky I can purchase locally and save the shipping costs but that shouldn’t stop you from trying the product of your choice. If you need a better night’s sleep, suffer from migraines, or just stay anxious all the time (and who doesn’t these days) you owe it to yourself to try CBD Oil in whatever form you choose.

Research shows that when you supplement your endocannabinoid system with non-toxic, non-habit-forming cannabinoids, you may create a healthier ECS and therefore a healthier you. Learn more about your ECS system at The National Institutes of Health. We have only recently discovered that we have our own cannabinoid system inside our bodies, this is groundbreaking stuff here!

There are so many ways and products that CBD Oil is a part of, yet I am only familiar with the product I use from Blue Moon Hemp for its quality and trusted performance.

Guess What? You Can Buy Kerrygold Butter On Amazon…But I Wouldn’t Recommend It

*This post may contain affiliate links, please check my disclosure.

So, I have to provide reviews of all kinds here on the patio, so just for grins, I thought I’d check into whether my favorite butter, that being the grass-fed kind, specifically Kerrygold brand, could be purchased on Amazon...guess what?! You can!! However, I would not recommend it, only because it costs considerably more than you would pay for it in the store.

Real butter from real ingredients

Currently, I buy mine at Walmart for $3.44 per delicious gold brick. At Amazon, the same brick will cost $4.40 plus tax and shipping. Really? Actually, the first ad that popped up said $14.95 + $4.99 shipping! Must be a misprint I thought, so I added it to my cart to see if it really was only one 8oz. brick of butter and sure enough, it was! I’m definitely not buying one brick of butter no matter how tasty for upwards of $25!

By the way, I’m loving using Grammarly on both of my websites, it corrects my spelling, punctuation,  and other errors so editing my content is a breeze. Thanks, Grammarly!

Back to the butter though, Kerrygold is the ONLY butter I use, and I use it every day in my bulletproof coffee, for my sweet potatoes and whenever else I need to use butter. Yes, it costs a little bit more, but I love the quality and assurance that the ingredients are made from pure full fat cream that comes from grass-fed cows.

There are plenty of other products that are a better buy on Amazon, and one thing I like is the Smile program. A portion of your purchase goes to your favorite charity, you can change it anytime you want! It’s free to join and it goes to a good cause. They are also selling produce now on Amazon, through a program called Prime Fresh. Pretty soon, there will be no need to go to the grocery store. Of course, you pay for this convenience, but it’s worth it not to have to go to the grocery store. Shopping from your home in your pj’s sounds good to me!

Explanation of Prime Fresh membership

So, if you want to buy your butter from Amazon, or anything else for that matter, they have thousands of products and tons of services to try. There is even a new music service that is free to join for a short period, go and check it out! For me, it’s just one of those pick and choose kind of deals, I won’t be buying my butter from Amazon but I would definitely buy a book or some essential oils or something. If you would like to try anything I have mentioned here today, just click on any of the blue links, and they will take you where you want to go. Thanks for stopping by!
